Survey now live – let us know what solutions you’d like to see for Main Road

Have your say - let's create design solutions for Main Road!

We have now entered into a new, exciting stage of the project!

As we move forward into the Develop Stage of the project to re-imagine Main Road and its public spaces, we’re excited to share another opportunity to have your say.

This stage is all about exploring solutions that align with the needs and aspirations of the Elderslie community.

In our previous Discover Stage, we gathered valuable insights and data through a wide range of methods; surveys, events, meetings and workshops with residents, businesses and local groups. Your feedback is what has led to the shaping our Design Objectives, which will guide the design process to ensure that the final concept design reflect your concerns and ideas for Main Road and it’s public spaces.

Have your say and fill out the survey.

We’ve created a surveys that focus on different areas of Main Road—east, central, west and Main Road as a whole—and asks questions based on the Design Objectives.

Links to the surveys below

By filling out the survey, you’ll be directly influencing the direction of the design process. Whether you live, work, or frequently visit a specific area of Main Road, your input is invaluable.

The survey is tailored to address the specific challenges and opportunities of each section of Main Road, so you can choose the one that is most relevant to you. Your comments and suggestions, together with solutions that were discussed at the public event on 15 August, will play a critical role in helping our urban designers craft the first draft of the concept design for Main Road and its public spaces.

You have the option to opt in to enter the prize draw survey to win one of three £25 Renfrewshire Gift Cards as a thank you for taking the time to fill out the survey.

What’s Next?

After we collect your feedback, our team will get to work on the first draft of the concept design, which we’ll share with you this winter. This will be another opportunity for you to have your say and ensure that the design truly reflects the vision of the people of Elderslie. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months!

Don’t Miss the Deadline

The deadline to complete the survey is Monday, 30 September, 5pm. Don’t miss this chance to make your voice heard and contribute to the future of Main Road. Your participation is essential to creating a safe, functional, and vibrant space that everyone in Elderslie can enjoy.

Would you or someone you know prefer a paper survey?

Please email elderslie@sustrans.org.uk or call 0131 346 1384 to receive a paper survey and a freepost envelope to return the completed survey. Let us know what survey area you are most interested in (east, central or west – a mix, or all areas!).

Thank you to those who have had an active part in this project so far. The project team is always contactable via email at elderslie@sustrans.org.uk

Event Recap: Developing Design Solutions for Main Road

Thank You for Joining Us: A Successful Workshop on Designing Solutions for Main Road

We want to extend a thank you to everyone who joined us on Thursday, 15th August, for our design workshops focused on developing solutions for Main Road. Your participation made the event a success, with around 60 attendees contributing to the workshops or short stay activities throughout the day.

The event

Through interactive sessions, we engaged in valuable conversations about how to make Main Road more accessible for everyone, particularly those walking, wheeling, and cycling. We also explored ideas on how to better utilise the public spaces along Main Road, envisioning a more vibrant and welcoming environment that celebrates Elderslie’s history and heritage. The event was really positive and participants came ready to discuss the possible solutions for Main Road, whether that was through the specific workshops or through chatting to a member of the project team.

What if I couldn't attend?

If you were unable to attend the event, we still want to hear from you!

We will publish an online survey where you can share your thoughts and ideas on the future of Main Road and its public spaces. Keep an eye out for this opportunity to have your say and help us create a Main Road that works for everyone.

At the event we presented the Discover Stage Summary and the Design Objectives – please take a look at these and let us know what you think or if we have missed anything.

What's next?

Your input has provided us with a strong foundation as we move forward with this project. The next steps will involve more focused engagement with specific groups, including children and young people, people with disabilities, and further discussions with local businesses. Hearing from these voices will be crucial in shaping a Main Road that meets the needs of the entire community of Elderslie.

All of these ideas and suggestions will help take the project forward and allow our Urban Designers to create a first draft concept design for Main Road, which we aim to share in the winter. You will have the opportunity to review and share feedback on the first draft, which we will tweak and re-share the final concept design by March 2025.

Thank you!

Thank you again to everyone who took the time to come to the event and engaged with the project so far!

Special thanks to the wonderful Elderslie Coffee Shop for providing delicious refreshments and to Erika Stevenson for capturing the event.

As always, the project team is available via email at elderlsie@sustrans.org.uk to answer any questions or take any feedback or suggestions.

Discover Event Recap and Public Life Study

Discover Event Recap

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and chatted to the project team on Thursday 25 April at our on-street stall.

In total we talked to around 90 people throughout the duration of the day. It was great to get your insights into Main Road, your concerns, and the improvements you would like to see through this project.

Elderslie residents at the event

That is what this stage is all about – listening and understanding what the community of Elderslie think of Main Road and what changes they would like to see. These comments, along with the 445 contributions to the surveys, commissioned monitoring of traffic and conversations with businesses and local groups, will help us get a good picture of Elderslie Main Road as it currently is.

Comments made at the eventComments made at the event

This information and data feeds into the next stage of the project where we will analyse and determine themes to explore further and create design ideas with the community during the next stage; Develop, which should be launching in the summer. More on that soon!

Public Life Study

This Thursday 16th, Friday 17th and Saturday 18th May you will see some people from Sustrans standing along Main Road with clipboards.

We will be conducting a Public Life Study, which essentially is observing and making note of how people move through and interact with the public spaces along Main Road.

This helps us to understand how the street is currently being used by Elderslie residents and visitors. This information collected will feed into the Discover Stage of the project to give us a good picture of how Main Road is currently being used.

There will be six people at different locations along Main Road conducting the survey as well as two supervisors floating around Main Road. If you have any questions about what we are doing or the project in general, the supervisors will be more than happy to have a chat with you.

Elderslie for Everyone: Frequently asked questions

Elderslie for Everyone is an exciting opportunity for the local community, businesses, residents and all who have an interest in the area to re-imagine Main Road, making it a more vibrant, accessible, and welcoming place for people to spend time in and travel through.

Sustrans Scotland is working in partnership with the local community to collaboratively reimagine this public space, with support from Renfrewshire Council. Here the project team has provided answers to some of the questions the community have about the project.

The Elderslie for Everyone is always available to answer any questions you may have.

You can reach us via email: Elderslie@sustrans.org.uk or via phone: 0131 346 1384 and request a call back from the Elderslie for Everyone project team.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How did this project come about?

A: This project is part of Sustrans Scotland’s National Cycle Network Urban programme. A review of urban centres that connect with the network was undertaken and Elderslie was selected as having the greatest benefits from a project and also a high potential for a feasible design to boost the experience for those walking, wheeling and cycling in and through Elderslie.

Q: Who is delivering this project?

A: Sustrans Scotland’s Collaborative Design Team are delivering this project in partnership with Renfrewshire Council. The team is made up of project managers, community engagement specialists and urban designers. Whilst Sustrans are delivering it, the local community are involved in every stage of the project and will be crucial to its success.

Q: Is the council involved?

A: Renfrewshire Council are supporting the project.

Q: How will this project be funded?

A: Elderslie for Everyone is being funded by the Scottish Government through Sustrans Scotland’s National Cycle Network Urban programme.

Q: How long will the project last?

A: The proposed collaborative design process will last until March 2025, by the end of which we will have a concept design that has been designed with the local community through different stages throughout the year. After this point, the design will be developed further in more detail.

At this early stage in the project, the proposed delivery programme is subject to finalised designs, permissions and ongoing funding from Transport Scotland.

Q: How much will the project cost?

A: Funding is allocated for each phase of delivery. The total cost will be dependent upon what the community seeks to achieve in the area.

Q: Will there be any consultation with the local community?

A: Elderslie for Everyone is being developed with the local community, businesses, residents and all who have an interest in the area.

The ideas phase is now open and local people are invited to submit their thoughts to make the streets more vibrant, enhance the walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure, and generally make the area a more attractive place to live, work and visit.

To ensure that any improvements are designed with the local community, Sustrans Scotland will carry out community surveys, meet with businesses and local community groups in-person, deliver workshops with the local schools, engage with elected members, hold public engagement events in the village, and a project advisory group will be created with representatives from across Elderslie.

Q: Is this project only about improving the cycling route?

A: No, it is not only about cycling. This project is seeking to make improvements to Elderslie’s public realm and improve the experience for people walking, wheeling and cycling. That can include things like improving pavements, adding in crossings, putting in planters and benches and creating better places for the community to socialise. The project area also includes three areas that are off Main Road, such as the space in Stoddard Square in front of the shops. The improvements to be made will be determined by the community through our collaborative design and engagement process.

Q: How will this benefit the people who live in Elderslie? And not just the people who use the National Cycle Network?

A: Making improvements to the public space on Elderslie’s Main Road, as suggested by those in the community, will bring about lots of benefits by making Elderslie a more vibrant, accessible and welcoming space to spend time in and travel actively around.

Elderslie for Everyone will create safe and convenient routes for walking, wheeling, and cycling by reimagining Main Road – making it easier for people in the area to leave the car at home for their everyday journeys.

That is why if you live or work in Elderslie, it is important to get involved and have your say during each stage of the project to make sure the improvements made best reflect the needs of those who use the public spaces the most.

Q: Is this project a good investment during a cost-of-living crisis?

A: Long-term investment in accessible infrastructure which gives people the opportunities to make healthier, happier and more sustainable everyday journeys is important to the future of Scotland’s communities. It is how many people get to work, go to the shops and travel around their local area healthily, cheaply, and emissions-free.

Providing a new walking, wheeling and cycling link will allow residents and visitors to Elderslie to access local amenities and save money by leaving their car at home for more everyday journeys. Working with, and for, our communities to think big with projects like will play a crucial role in reaching our car use reduction and Net Zero targets, and will help create a healthier, greener and fairer Scotland for everyone.

Q: Could Main Road become a 20mph route?

A: This would be down to council approval and the wider plan for 20mph routes in Renfrewshire.

Q: Why should cyclists get better facilities than pedestrians?

A: Our proposals follow the national transport hierarchy which puts walking and wheeling above cycling. Our community-led design approach means that the changes that are made will be requested by the community, who are the people using the space, to make it an improved place for them to live and work in. Part of this is to improve health and wellbeing, by enabling people to access spaces without relying on a car, and to improve the local environment through the reduction of pollutions relating to motorised transport, such as air and noise, that can negatively affect someone’s health. Elderslie is fortunate to have direct access to the National Cycle Network, which is a space for walkers, not just cyclists, to enjoy.

Q: Can you make improvements to the National Cycle Network, especially to make it safer at nighttime?

A: We will look at some opportunities to improve the stretch of the National Cycle Network close to Elderslie, but this isn’t the main focus of this project.

Q: There is not enough parking at Nisa, the Village Hall and on-street – can you increase parking through this project?

A: We will look at existing parking along the street and create an environment that can accommodate different modes and uses. However, creating more parking will not be considered through this project. Elderslie for Everyone is being funded by the Scottish Government through Sustrans Scotland’s National Cycle Network Urban programme which aims to increase active travel across Scotland, so we need to ensure we are meeting the funding goals with the design.

Q: Is this project going to be similar to the cycle path that was installed and then ripped out on Beith Road?

A: No. Beith Road infrastructure was temporary during the COVID pandemic which aimed to be quick and efficient in providing safer routes for people cycling and allow more space for people to socially distance. Elderslie for Everyone aims to build a permanent scheme which will create a legible and coherent route for all users. It will involve permanent changes to the streetscape, which could include excavating, moving kerb lines, and resurfacing as some examples.

Q: You have already tried to attempt this project, why are you doing it again?

A: The scale and ambition of Elderslie for Everyone always meant that considerable time would be needed to ensure the project truly delivers for the people of Elderslie. We are excited to now be able to get the project underway.

The Elderslie for Everyone project is focussed on improving the public realm for the community who live and work in the village. Part of these works will include improving the experience for users of the National Cycle Network through Elderslie and ensuring that as people who access Elderslie, they can also have a safe experience through the village. This project is intended to boost the existing opportunities in Elderslie, to encourage more people to spend time in the village and help support local businesses and services.

Q: Why is the project area not continuing towards the National Cycle Network route by the old railway bridge? Safer crossing points are needed further east than the scope of this project.

A: The scope of the project area was determined to maximise the value to the local community by focussing on public areas, such as the three key green spaces, to make it a village everyone can safely and comfortably navigate and enjoy.

Q: When will construction start?

The design will be community-led, and phases will be dependent upon what the community would like us to deliver. Typically, these are three-phase projects from initiation to construction but when a concept design has been developed to meet the community’s needs, we will be able to carry out the next phase of activities that help refine the delivery programme, which is also subject to the availability of further funding.

There will be refreshments available so come and have a chat over a cuppa and cake.

What will we do with the comments gathered?

The local insights and suggestions for improvement at this stage is invaluable for the project. These help us understand how Main Road currently serves the community and what areas the community would like to see improved.

This information, along with the survey data, comments on the heatmap and commissioned road user surveys, will go through a thorough analysis by the project team to understand Main Road. From this, themes will be pulled out and presented to the Elderslie community during the next stage of the project, Develop. The Develop stage will look at developing design ideas together to address the concerns and improvements you suggested during the Discover stage of the project.

What's the latest for Elderslie for Everyone?

The Elderslie for Everyone team have been busy in Elderslie and behind the scenes, meeting with local groups and businesses as well as preparing for the upcoming event.

Read on to find out more about what's been happening and what's coming up.

Some highlights from the past few months:

  1. Wallace Primary School Street Audit: read all about what the pupils thought of Elderslie Main Road here
  2. Attending Community Council meetings to provide project updates and hear any concerns from the community that could be addressed through this project.
  3. Meetings with businesses in Elderslie to understand their current barriers and aspirations for Elderslie Main Road, in terms of their business needs.
  4. The first meeting of the Project Advisory Group, which is made up of a wide range of community representatives, Councillors, representatives from Renfrewshire Council and the Sustrans team.
  5. A meeting and walkaround with Evergreen Elderslie volunteers to chat through the current work they do to keep Elderslie looking great, and how this project can support the continuation this work.

Upcoming event – Thursday 25 April

Come along to our pop-up stands along Elderslie Main Road, to chat to the project team and tell us what you would like to see happen through Elderslie for Everyone.

Invitation to the upcoming event on Thursday 25 April. 11am - 2pm at Stoddard Square and 3pm - 6pm at the green space opposite Nisa. Everyone is welcome!

Thank you to everyone who filled out the community survey and commented on the project map. This information is invaluable and has allowed us to see what the main concerns and opportunities are for Elderslie Main Road.

This event will build on what we learned in the survey to look at these concerns in more depth. It is also another opportunity for those who have not had the chance yet to comment.

There will be refreshments and child friendly activities, so please pop by if you can!

This is a community-led project, where the concerns and ideas raised at this stage of the project will be taken forward into the next stage so we can develop solutions together.

Elderslie Route User Intercept Survey

As part of our baseline monitoring, we will be commissioning a Route User Intercept Survey. This involves intercepting and surveying as many users on the National Cycle Network (NCN) route that goes through Elderslie. The surveys ask users about their journey purpose, travel behaviour, perceptions of safety, physical activity levels and their health and wellbeing. There will also be manual counts of all route users (including counting those that do not take part in the survey). This helps us understand the current usage of the NCN.

When is this happening and where?

This will be taking place on Wednesday 17th April, Saturday 20th April, Wednesday 24th April and Saturday 27th April.

The location of the survey is on the traffic free section of the NCN 75, at the green space opposite Nisa and Reach Pharmacy.

Wallace Primary pupils tell us what they think of Elderslie Main Road

Healthy Streets Survey - What did we do?

The Eco Committee and Junior Road Safety Officers at Wallace Primary School conducted a ‘healthy streets survey’ to let us know their thoughts and suggestions for Elderslie Main Road and public spaces.

In February, Sustrans’ engagement officers took 44 pupils on a walk along the project area, stopping at three locations (the green space opposite Nisa, Glenpatrick Road junction and Stoddard Square). At each location we discussed and rated the street and public space against some of the healthy street indicators, as well as asking ‘what would you like to see here?’.

What is a healthy streets survey?

The healthy streets survey asks people how they perceive a street, against a number of indicators. These indicators are what makes streets appealing, healthy and inclusive places. We looked at things such as safety, places to sit, shelter or things to see and do in the area.

The 10 Healthy Streets Indicators © Lucy Saunders

What did we find out?

Overall, the healthy street survey showed that the children felt that the crossing was unsafe, there were not enough places to sit and shelter and not many things to see or do. The children were happy with the amount of plants and trees along Main Road, felt most safe at Stoddard Square and appreciated the amount of seating there.

The Green Space Opposite Nisa

The main things that the children were unhappy about here was the lack of places to shelter, the safety of crossing the road and that there was not many things to see or do. The children liked the amount of plants and trees and felt neutral about the places to sit. The improvements the children suggested for this area were: a playground, exercise equipment, more lights, more flowers, shelter over the benches and a zebra crossing.

Glenpatrick Road Junction

In this area, the children said it was most difficult to walk and wheel, in particular when crossing the road. They also rated the area negatively in terms of places to sit, shelter and things to see and do. Their suggestions for the area were to add “something that catches your eye”, flowers, shelter and benches.

Stoddard Square

Stoddard Square was the area the children said they felt most safe in terms of being in the square, however were not very happy about the ease of crossing the road here. They commented on that there were enough places to sit and rest, referring to the picnic benches but would like more shelter. The improvements the children suggested for Stoddard Square were: a shelter, zebra crossing, more plants and “a really big tree”, and more “amusing stuff”.

Our Wish for Elderslie

At the end of the workshop, the pupils were asked to write down one thing they would like to see in Elderslie as part of this project. The wordcloud below clearly shows what the children hope to see included in the new designs with benches, shelters, colour and zebra crossings standing out as key elements.

What's next?

Thank you to all the pupils, teachers and parents helpers who took part in the healthy streets survey.

This is just the start of the work we will be doing with Wallace Primary School through the Elderslie for Everyone project. These comments will be taken and analysed along with the wider communities comments which will feed into the next stage of the project.

Survey deadline extended until Wednesday 14th February!

Haven't filled out the survey yet? Fear not, you've got until Wednesday 14th February to share your views on Elderslie's Main Road and public green spaces!

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to fill out our surveys either online or through the paper survey which all residents should have recived. We appreciate your comments, which will help shape the project!

We have extended the deadline to fill out the survey so we can hear from as many Elderslie residents, businesses, community groups and visitors as possible.

Fill out the short survey, as well as commenting on the project area mapand let us know what you think about Main Road as it currently is and what changes you would like to see.

You can also opt in to be entered into a prize draw to win one of three £50 shopping vouchers, as a thank you for your time.

If you have already filled it in, then please spread the word to friends and neighbours and encourage them to fill it in. The more people we hear from the better picture we have of Elderslie as it is now, and what changes the community would like to see.

If you would like a paper copy of the survey and freepost envelope, or would like to speak with the project team, we are available at elderslie@sustrans.org.uk or by calling 0131 346 1384 and requesting a call back from the Elderslie for Everyone project team.

Discovering Elderslie

As part of the Elderslie for Everyone project, the ‘Discover Stage’ of the project is all about learning as much as we can about how people travel around and spend time in Elderslie.

Taking the time to hear from as many people as possible will give us a good understanding of the needs and aspirations of the community, which will help to steer the direction of the project and the design for Main Road.

So what have we got planned?

Surveys

The week beginning the 8th January, there will be traffic speed and volume counts, and cameras doing basic counts of non-motorised users at multiple locations on Elderslie Main Road, conducted by external contractors. This will allow us to understand how Main Road is currently used by people.

We have extended the deadline to fill out the community survey and map! You have until Wednesday 31st January. You can also opt in to be entered into a prize draw to win one of three £50 shopping vouchers, as a thank you for your time. Every household in Elderslie should have received a project leaflet and paper survey, which can be returned using the freepost envelope provided. If this is not the case, please email elderslie@sustrans.org.ukand we can redeliver.

Public Event

We will be having a public event where the whole community is invited to come along, meet the project team and chat about their barriers to moving around and spending time on Main Road. This project aims to make improvements to the public realm, creating places that are vibrant, accessible and welcoming that encourage people to spend more time in Elderslie. The team are busy preparing for the event, more information will be revealed soon, through this website and posters around Elderslie.

Engagement workshops with local groups

Everyone’s experience of navigating Elderslie will be different, so we want to ensure we have heard from a wide range of people, including young people, elderly people and disabled people, as well as hearing from people who already do a lot of brilliant work in the community. We will be reaching out to the local schools, community groups and Renfrewshire access panel to speak directly with them as part of our targeted engagement.

If you run or are part of a group that would like to speak with the Elderslie for Everyone team, please get in touch with Mollie at elderslie@sustrans.org.uk to arrange this.

We are looking forward to meeting the community of Elderslie!
